Initial appearance of agriculture, religious and political institutions. Evidence that Native Americans visited and then lived in this area.

First Spanish explorers set foot in what is now South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.

1663
Sir John Colleton, an English lord and gentleman, is one of the original Lords Proprietors who are granted vast land grants in South Carolina by the King.

1718
The Devil's Elbow Barony, a 12,000 tract of land, is granted to Sir John Colleton, grandson of the first Sir John Colleton. Our current Colleton River Plantation lies entirely within this tract. Devil's Elbow was the name of the area of Colleton Neck where the Colleton River turns north and then south into Port Royal Sound.

Revolutionary War Period
Southern culture takes root. Indigo and rice become huge sources of wealth and form the linchpins of the local economy.

Late 19th Century
In 1890, the Foot Point Land Company is formed and the Colleton Neck area is considered for the location of a major railroad terminal as well as the seat of a major commercial development area.

20th/21st Centuries
The growth of Hilton Head Island and Bluffton leads to the development of off-Island gated communities such as Colleton River Plantation Club.
